James R. (Jason) Coltharp, Jr., was born in Paducah, Kentucky, November 12, 1976. He graduated from the University of Kentucky (B.A. with honors, magna cum laude) in 1998 and from the University of Kentucky College of Law (J.D., cum laude) in 2001. While an undergraduate at the University of Kentucky, Mr. Coltharp was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa and won the University's Philo Bennett Award for the best undergraduate history paper. At the College of Law, he was elected to the Trial Advocacy Board and to the Order of the Coif. He was also a member of the Kentucky Law Journal, where he served as Notes Editor. While serving on the Kentucky Law Journal, Mr. Coltharp authored Acting Without Just Cause: An Analysis of the Ninth Circuit's Decision in United States v. Symington, 89 Ky.L.J. 227 (2000). After completing law school, Mr. Coltharp served two years as a law clerk to the Honorable Thomas B. Russell, United States District Judge for the Western District of Kentucky. Mr. Coltharp was admitted to the Kentucky Bar in 2001, and he has also been admitted to the bars of the Western and Eastern Districts of Kentucky and to the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit,and to the Surpeme Court of the United States. He is a member of the American, Kentucky, and McCracken County Bar Associations. Mr. Coltharp is currently serving as Secretary for the Paducah Film Society, which operates the nonprofit Maiden Alley Cinema, and as Vice-President of the McCracken County chapter of the University of Kentucky Alumni Association, and he is past Secretary-Treasurer for the McCracken County Bar Association. Mr. Coltharp's practice is currently focused on civil litigation defense, construction law, and intellectual property law.
